Beginnings



Fred Neumann was born on September 24, 1942 in Posen, then occupied by the Nazis. After a dramatic escape during the final days of World War II, Fred grew up in a small village in Northern Germany. In 1960, Fred began studying Fine Arts at Hochschule für Künste Bremen.

In 1962 he moved to Hamburg, where he studied Painting at Hochschule für bildene Künste until he dropped out two years later. Together with various aspiring artists, Fred lived and worked in different studios for the next decade. His work was inspired by Pop Art and Photorealism.


Fred earned early fame with his »Black Paintings« of motorcycles and microphones, which were very popular among Hamburg socialites.
