An Artist’s Estate

Fred Neumann (1942 – 2019) was a German artist who started painting in the early 1960s and became one of the most acclaimed realistic painters in Hamburg by the 70s. His work was adored amongst collectors and socialites and exhibited in many group shows.

After Fred passed away in 2019, his closest friends Ulrike Fix, Friedrich Fix and Darius Wakilzadeh discovered a true treasure in his studio: Fred had left behind his favourite paintings from over fifty years that he could not bear to give away. This is Fred’s legacy.

After unveiling the treasure of over a hundred paintings, ranging from the 1960s to the year of Fred’s passing, we started cataloging and photographing the estate – knowing, that this was something special we’d have to share.

Fred had lived and worked in his last studio, a former attic of an appartment house, for almost thirty years. Although not being very spacious, over a hundred paintings were stored there, together with many books, records and souvenirs, Fred had collected over the years.

Luckily, Darius started taking pictures of the studio in 2018 when Fred was still alive. Photographer Susanne Katzenberg later helped documenting Fred’s paintings.

It would be a shame to hide Fred’s paintings in a dark storage. We want to tell his life’s story by presenting his work alongside photographs from his personal archive. Making sure, that his legacy is not forgotten.

Now that Fred’s studio is empty, all of his paintings are photographed, catalogued and stored, we feel it’s time to put them on display, starting online. In our eyes, Fred’s estate is a tremendous discovery.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us, if you are interested in Fred’s work and life.
